American companies opened 271,000 jobs in December, evidently higher than expectations, according to data today from the private recruiting agency ADP.
The latest data is better than in November, when 157,000 jobs opened and economists surveyed by Reuters's projections, which predicted 178,000 jobs would be opened in December.
37,000 jobs were created in the construction sector, and a sharp increase was observed in the service sector. In the corporate sector, 66,000 jobs were created, 611,000 in the education and health sector, and 39,000 in the hotel industry.
Economists predict the US Labour Ministry will announce Friday that employers have opened 180,000 jobs and that the unemployment rate has remained at 3.7 per cent, the lowest rate in the middle of the last century.
