Mayor Agim Bahtiri today at 09:30 will hand over the petition for uniting the town of Mitrovica with 16,594 citizen signatures.
The petition surrenders to Kosovo institutions, to the Government, Parliament, as well as to the President.
Bahtiri is asking relevant institutions to approve this initiative undertaken by Mitrovica citizens themselves.
Otherwise, the initiative for signing this petition has come after the Ministry of Management of Local Power has rejected the request of Mitrovica Chairman Agim Bahtiri, and Mitrovica's decision to change the Law on Administration Borders, aimed at uniting the town of Mitrovica.
The first to sign the petition was Agim Bahtiri and then other municipal officials. The first of Mitrovica had said that the city union does not in any way violate the territorial integrity of the Republic of Kosovo.
I'm asking all citizens of the Republic of Kosovo to stand up to this petition and legitimately address the Kosovo Assembly. There will be no political party, but it will be us all. The petition has begun today, Monday, and if anyone has speculation that it will not come true, it is wrong, because it will come true. I ask the citizens of Mitrovica to stand up for their country, and today they will respond voluntarily and traditionally to my” initiative, Bahtiri said.
Otherwise, the main bridge of the Iber River, which divides the town of Mitrovica to the north and south, was scheduled to open for the flow of vehicles and people on March 4th 2017.
Federica Moghrini had come to Mitrovica to clear the bridge, but the mayor of the northern municipality, Goran Rakiq, had declined. Even after two years the bridge remains closed, while the European Union still has no date for its opening.
