When Anna Brnabyc was elected last year, the LGBT community had many hopes, not only was she the first woman at the helm of a Serbian government, but was also the first LGBT politician to hold such a post throughout the Balkans. She participated in the 2017 parade in Belgrade, surrounded by posters that wrote “Ana is here” and made dozens. But a year later, LGBT is not satisfied. Their rights have not been improved, new laws have not been adopted, and there has been no decline in attacks on gay persons.
In conservative Orthodox Serbia, EU membership candidates, discrimination and violence against the LGBT community are widespread. The first parade of this community in Serbia in 2001 had also ended in violence when hundreds of hooligans and extremists attacked hikers, despite major security measures.
While about 100 people were injured when antigay protesters clashed with police during the parade of pride in Belgrade in 2010. In the years that followed, the Interior Ministry rejected the demands for the development of the parade. In 2014 alone, hikers returned to the streets, again under considerable police presence.
