German Foreign Minister Heiko Mass warned today in New York that pressure on Iran could lead Tehran to pursue a nuclear military programme and destabilise the entire Middle East.

Mass told reporters in the UN General Assembly margins that all three EU member states Russia and China last night agreed to try to preserve a nuclear agreement with Iran by 2015, despite US withdrawal from the agreement, the AP reports.

“The unification prevails among relevant parties that want to keep the agreement in force and ease the consequences of US sanctions,” said German Foreign Minister, adding that this includes relief payments for Iranian exports.

Germany, he said, is concerned that “under the greatest possible pressure, Iran could resume a nuclear military programme”.

“We don't want this, because it would put the entire region on fire”, the German minister concluded.
