The US State Department released Wednesday's annual report on terrorism for 2017. A special part, as usual, has been dedicated to Kosovo. Report FOR Terrorism.

Kosovo continued to oppose the growing threat of terrorism in 2017, the report said.

About 403 Kosovo citizens, the report says, have travelled to Syria and Iraq to join I SIS or El-Nusrah Front, of which about 74 have died. About 133 of these individuals have returned, while about 196 remain in these conflict areas. This number includes 40 children born from Kosovo citizens in conflict areas.

The security and political situation in Kosovo's north, said the report, has continued to limit the government's ability to exercise its authority in that region, although the government has successfully integrated Serbian judges, prosecutors and staff into Kosovo judicial institutions in October, expanding the country's judicial authority and access to justice for citizens.

Legislation, law enforcement and border security: Kosovo's legal framework is sufficient to prosecute individuals suspected of carrying out or supporting terrorist activities, but prosecutors have no experience in such cases, the report said.

Law enforcement authorities, the report says, showed sufficient ability to detect and prevent different individuals from joining conflicts in Syria and Iraq.

In Kosovo, the report says, they continued their trials and investigations into 51 suspects and 29 cases, including several emames arrested since 2014 on charges of terrorism. In 2017, Kosovo authorities arrested five other individuals under the same charges. Authorities filed seven new charges of terrorism involving 17 individuals.

During 2017, the Kosovo government reportedly took active steps to prepare a repatriation strategy for its citizens returning from conflict zones. / VoA
