Carl Bildt: Even Edi Rama supporter of the catastrophic exchange idea of territories

Carl Bildt, the Swedish diplomat who knows the Balkan region well, has warned against exchanging territories between Kosovo and Serbia. The former European emissary for the former Yugoslavia says such an idea is very dangerous, as it says, and would encourage population movements. Bildt in a scripture about [...]
When it comes to the future of the Balkans, discours are slowing down by proposing new divisions in the region, the recipe for geopolitical instability.
Serbian and Albanian leaders have investigated the possibility of resolving their differences using territorial exchanges. The idea of classifying divisions through the exchange of territories has circulated in Belgrade for years, but recently, it seems to have won attractions even to major Albanian circles.
Carl Bildt
The idea is not new at all, it was dangerous in the past and remains so in the present. Former Serbia leader Slobodan Milosevic and Croatia's leader Franjo Tudjman conspired in the early 1990s to divide Bosnia among them. But the international reaction prevented those plans.
But so far, the European Union and United States policy has been very clear: Borders in the old Yugoslavia must remain in place, and solutions should be sought within them. To further confront the Balkans is the opening of the region for further conflicts and bloodshed.
Kosovo's situation remains one of the most difficult issues in the region. It was not resolved by NATO's intervention in 1999, nor by the independence of 2008 as an independent state and recognised by a large number of nations. While there is no normalisation of relations between Serbia and Kosovo, the issue will limit both countries' potential and the stability of the region.
And that's why the idea of new territorial divisions has emerged again. There may be different versions of such schemes. Kosovo can launch the area north of the Iber River, inhabited by Serbs and then gain diplomatic recognition and possibly win several municipalities in southern Serbia.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq is thinking along these lines, and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama appears to have also been open, as I was told in the conversation, Bildt says, broadcast the Express newspaper.
As a result, the trend to divide has returned to the region, which has already been very confrontational, follows the text.
This is dangerous, both Washington and Brussels should see the risks. The gradual integration of Serbia and Albania into the EU and NATO on the basis of the existing borders is the only way towards sustainable stability in the region. Playing borders and divisions in the Balkans was dangerous in the early 1990s and remains so now.
