Pope Francisescu, through a statement today, announced that he has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, former archbishop in Washington.
The resignation comes after reports last month that US church officials had admitted that McCarric had sexually abused a teenager. This event had occurred some 50 years earlier. Other charges have been filed since.
The resignation of this cardinal also comes at the time the Vatican faces yet another sexual scandal in Chile.
The media have reported that McCarrick is the first cardinal to lose his title by the Catholic Church.
Bishops who have been involved in sexual abuse scandals have tarnished the reputation of the Catholic Church worldwide for decades. /rel/
