Iranian women had been banned from entering a football stadium for almost 40 years, but they were allowed to watch a football game at Azadi Stadium.

In June, the province's general governor of Tehran issued an order allowing local football fans, including women, to watch the public show, “reported. RT” Transmission Periscope.

Fans gathered in front of the stadium refused to return home and organised an improvised demonstration in protest of free movement.

The video showing women and children sitting on the ground near the site has alarmed social media that prompted Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahman Fazli to intervene.

He ordered police to allow women to enter the stadium to see the national team.

Since 1979, women had been forbidden to watch a football game.

In May 2018, five Iranian women challenged the law by entering a football game worn as men.

Last year, Iranian women had been forbidden to enter the stadium to attend the World Cup qualifying game between Iran and Syria, while Syrian women had access to their team. /Periscopi/
