Costa was introduced from the bench to the second in Brazil's 2-0 win against Costa Rica.
It was reported that he would start the latest group match against Serbia from the beginning.
On Saturday evening, however, Brazil's medical staff confirmed that it will be missing as a result of muscle injury to the right thigh.
