Italy must pay a 25m-euro fine for failing to meet the conditions of the sewage processing system, according to EU standards, including further penalties for every six months' delay, the European Court of Justice has ruled.
Italy has repeatedly violated the European Union's rules of sewage processing, including violating an initial deadline set in December 2000 for installing water processing systems and sewage processing plants.
In 2012, the European Court of Justice ruled that Italy had failed to provide 109 urban areas with enough facilities for collecting or processing sewage, giving Rome until February 2016 to meet union conditions.
