Milo Djukanovic, who headed Montenegro for a quarter century until his resignation in 2016, announced his candidacy for the 15 April presidential election today.

“This decision is an expression of my accountability towards the heritage and needs for Montenegro's future development”, the 56-year-old media politician said.

He was first elected to the prime minister's post in 1991.

The key Originator of Montenegro's NATO membership, Milo Djukanovic, is also a supporter of his country's membership in the European Union.

Montenegro has been a candidate country for EU membership since 2012.
