Robbers who presented themselves as plumbers kidnapped the girl by a driver who handled the transportation of cash and requested the means of transport as a reward for releasing her. The conspiracy took place yesterday along the French-Switzerland border.
Robbers could receive about 30 million Swiss francs or about 20m euros from the van.
The driver's 22-year-old daughter had been kidnapped from her apartment in the French town of Lyon on Thursday by two men presenting themselves as plumbers.
The driver headed toward the Swiss town of Lausanne when he received a phone call asking for a reward.
They tied the girl into a car and then cooperated with her father's associates, who work for a Swiss company that carries ready bank money to request a reward.
He agreed to meet the kidnappers in a car park just across the Swiss border to deliver the van with money, investigators said.
Police in Vaud's Swiss canton said the father was on his way to the Swiss town of Lausanne when he was forced off the highway and left for the car park where he met with robbers wearing gloves and hats.
There, several armed men waiting for the van, empty the vehicle and fled to a dark Porsche SUV, the Swiss police said in a statement Friday.
The driver's daughter was found intact on a street in the suburbs of Lyon.
She was asked by the police on Friday and said she was still in shock.
No arrests have been made yet, while the investigation is led by French police.
Swiss police said they were looking for three French men, possibly from the south of France or North Africa”.
“Many details remain inexplicable”, the French source said, adding that the investigation was expected to take a while.
