United States President Donald Trump spoke over the phone with Turkey's President, Recep Tayip Erdogan, about the maritime confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.
Russia has annexed three Ukrainian ships and arrested its crew on the coasts outside the Crimea, saying they have been illegally passed into its waters. Similarly, it has opened fire, wounding six Ukrainians.
Ukraine has declared a state of war in several areas of the country.
“The two leaders expressed deep concern about the incident in the Kric Strait and the continuing maintenance of the ships and members of the Ukrainian crew”, said through a statement, Sanders.
Erdogan said he has talked on the phone with Russia's president, Vladimir Putin, and with Ukraine's president, Petro Porosenko.
In my conversation with Putin, the main theme was the situation continuing with Ukraine. Can we serve as mediator? We have discussed this issue with both sides”, Erdogan said.
