An Albanian convicted in absence of 25 years in prison for murder in Albania continues to live free in the United Kingdom.

This news is reported by British media, which listed the profile and criminal past of Hector Mahmutaj, 42.

He claims that any possible extradition to Albania would constitute human rights violations. As writes “Dalymail”, Mahmutaj results in a 25-year sentence for the farmer's murder, Genitan Jahaj, in July 1997 in a village of Fier, while later fled to England, escaping Albanian justice.

In addition, another English media writes that Mahmutaj moves freely to Great Britain using 13 different identities as a way of escaping police investigation. Mahmutaj was arrested at an Interpol order in December 2006, also reporting “Sunday Express”, which raises the question of why a convicted killer moves freely on the streets of Great Britain.

He was convicted and later imprisoned for 2.5 for, while Interpol listed criminal acts for the Albanian, such as “attempted murder and possession of war ammunition”. But even though the extradition request was active, a year later this was denied to Albanian authorities.

The judge would then declare Mahmutaj was not deliberately hiding from Albanian authorities, while if it was extradited to Albania, a new judicial process was not guaranteed to him. Albanian authorities issued another warrant for arrest 10 years later, following amendments voted in laws in terms of retrial. The Albanian has been arrested in January and currently in the event of extradition, he will face retrial.

The judge, Tan Ikram, has underlined the fact that he could be extradited to Albania, but taking into consideration the part where he is not a citizen of the European Union, the issue must first be passed on to Home Secretary. The fugitive for murder in Albania has left a guarantee fund in court. According to the Dailymail, Mahmutaj has left close to $10,000, while between 11:00 and 3:00 he moves free.

The Albanian, the father of two children, has flatly denied being involved in the killing of Fier, but adds that his escape came out of fear of possible revenge, which could be committed by the real killer. Meanwhile, even some policy representatives in Britain have viciously attacked the Albanian, urging authorities to leave him in custody, as it could disappear.
