Yono Simbolon suffered terrible pain when a religious officer disguised his back with a stick on an improvised scene outside a mosque in Banda Aceh capital.
He was told that he had humbled the law, recognised it at a local level as Kanun, and was sentenced to 36 lashes, avoiding a long damage to prison.
Symbolon is the third Christian to suffer such an act since the implementation of Islamic law began and was granted a special autonomy in 2001.
