UN member states must prepare to manage large immigrant movements, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned in a report released today.
“There is an urgent need for member states to develop a strategy to manage large immigrant movements”, the UN chief stresses in the document.
According to the UN, formal negotiations are expected to begin in February on the issue, before an intergovernmental conference is held in December in Morocco to approve this document.
At the end of 2017, the U.S.A. announced it would withdraw from processing the Pact on Migrants because of provisions contrary to President Donald Trump's new immigration policy.
For the secretary general, three important elements should be considered by member states in determining the strategy, “first a humanitarian approach based on human rights protection, second, financial resources to determine immigrant status, since first humanitarian aid has been provided and third, to find reliable opportunities for immigrants who cannot obtain refugee status while unable to return to their country of origin”.
