The European Commission proposed today a reform of the European political parties' funding rules, with the aim of strengthening their “democratic legitimacy” and penalising abuses more effectively.
The EU also promised to make “vulnerable” European citizens' initiatives allow one million European citizens to seek reforms near the European executive.
One of the measures announced Friday, expected to be approved by member states, and the European Parliament predicts that the percentage of funding distributed to European political parties based on election results would increase from 85 per cent to 95 per cent.
“In the current system, financing has been distributed to the 15 per cent level among all parties, despite the number of votes won”, the Commission explained, wanting to define a very close connection through real representation and financing.
