More than 1.1 million people from 2.2 million who have submitted a request for asylum in the EU, Norway and Switzerland still do not know whether their application will be accepted. A survey by American company “Pew Research” points out that applicants from Albania top the list of asylum seekers with the highest level of unturned responses.
So about 89% of Albanian applicants or 75 thousand out of 80 thousand who have applied between 2015 and 2016 are waiting to recognise their status in Europe at the end of 2016. This is reinforced by the fact that applicants from Kosovo are ranked second, where out of 65 thousand 50,000 applications are still pending an answer.
Then countries like Afghanistan, Iran, Serbia, Russia are ranked. Our neighbours Serbs have submitted 200 thousand asylum applications, 50,000 of which have received an answer. “Pew Research” estimates that about 100,000 people who were denied applications have fled somewhere in Europe where they live illegally.
Albania's authorities have recently been moved to worry by some European countries to curb the influx of asylum seekers still high. Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn also made it clear during the regional meeting of the region's prime ministers, which was held in Durres that Albanians should not even think about asylum.
For asylum seekers from several countries, the share that is awaiting the answer is much higher than what has been approved, according to new estimates. Pea considers this to be the biggest wave of asylum seekers who have experienced the continent since World War II.
