The Lumbardi Foundation in collaboration with the Central State Film Archive presents the “4 film program Stories from the Albanian Archive” treated by Ana Grgiić and presented by Julian Beyko. The dates 24, 25, 28 July and 29 July will feature four different films, starting at 9: 00 p.m. at Kino Lumbardi. In four sessions to be held in the last week of July, four stories are presented by the Albanian Film Archive that take us to Albania from the 1970s, a decade of turbulence for its people and country.
The first film is Kapedaniı, a comedy/sati on the role of the woman, and a comment on the main social challenges of modern progressive Albania during Hoxha's regime, which faces the traditional and patriarchal past. The second, White Street, is an example of the image of a socialist work martyr, the idea of a worker sacrificing himself for the general benefit of the nation, an ideological element present even in other socialist regimes. Third, Tomka and his friends, a film for children or a children's film, a story of an Albanian group of children resisting German occupation during World War II, a movie containing propaganda elements as much as neo-realistic aesthetics, directed by the most famous female director of the Kinosudio era, Gianfis Kekos. The fourth, General Gramaphony, contains a criticism of capitalism beyond strict work, while putting notions as civilized, cultivated-barbars, etc.
Four very different films, but produced in an era signaling major political and social changes for Albania, are all evidence of Hoxha's interest in the film as a powerful tool for co-ordinating culture and education for propagandistic purposes. To contextise movies and present them, Professor Julian Bejko from the University of Tirana will participate in the first two sessions.
Films are shown in the framework of the Kino Lumbardi movie special programmes. For the implementation of this programme, Albania's Cinema Project, DokuFest and Tyron thanks the Lumbard Foundation.
