European diplomacy chief Federica Moghrini and EU Commissioner for Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn, on the 22nd anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica have issued a joint statement.
Our heart and our thoughts are with the victims of genocide and with family members and friends. Today we give an honorable reminder to victims”, they said.
After Srebrenica was taken over by Serbian entities under the command of Ratko Mladic on 11 July 1995, Bosnian civilians who fled to Dutch soldiers surrendered to Serbs.
Serbs, who allowed the arrival of women and children in the region controlled by Bosnian soldiers, slaughtered more than 80,000 Bosniaks in the forested area, in factories and warehouses that were then buried in mass graves.
In 2007 this event was accepted as genocide by the International Court of Justice.
Mortore remains, found in mass graves, in works launched for the post-war disappearances, after identifying identity, are buried every year on July 11th with a ceremony held at the memorial cemetery in Potocari.
