Bariq, Croatian dedictating Albanian in 1920 in mid- Belgrade

The start of interest in learning Albanian in Serbia dates back to 1905, when Belgrade University -- which was released that year by the Great School -- issued the regulation for the beginning of Albanian language teaching and literature. Belgrade University Rector 1907, prof. Jovan Cvijic, many times in his works, has stressed the importance of studying Albanian language and culture.
A new field of studies can be opened where they can start studies on the ethnography, language, and dialects of the Arbaans”, he says in his books. In 1920-1921 alone, “History and Albanian grammar” were provided. Although it is only the subject that was put into the school program of the philosophical faculty that was put that year, it is also the year taken as the beginning of albananology at the University of Belgrade.
The greatest merit for putting on this subject and expanding the interest in studying Albanian is for Indok Barakis, the Catholic-born Croat in Dubrovnik, who had finished his studies abroad in Graz and Vienna, Austria.
It for many years dealt with the study of the comparison and historical grammar of Indo-European languages and was especially interested in studying preslove and Balkan languages, showing particular trends and interest in studying the Albanian language.
From the scientific works of 1918 to its most mature stage of 1950-1960, he wrote a huge number of linguistic studies in which albanological subjects took the key.
Henrik Bariq, among other things, dealt with the issue of the origin of Albanians and the history of Albanian, was singled out as editor-in-chief of various publications, which distinguished themselves for the high scientific level inside and outside the country, among which can be singled out “Archivate for Albanian age, language and ethnology”, “Archive Biblioteca”, <x4Bibliotka Lingu) ”, <6th>
In 1924 the Council of the Philosopher Faculty made the decision to establish Semnar for Albanian Philology, which was entrusted to Henrik Barakis. A small number of students registered at the seminar, but the devotion of this scientist, as well as seriousness in scientific work, greatly influenced the University of Belgrade to become aware of the importance of Albanian and its institutionalism.
Thus, the great professor in the context of his speeches, during the 1922-1923 school year, focused on presloven languages on the Balkan Peninsula, as well as the effects of Latin in Albanian.
From 1923 to 1927, he conducted several different courses, under which he processed and the question of Macedonian gloses, Illyrian inscriptions, Albanian morphine, and in the 1926-1927 school year he gave the subject “access to the history of the Albanian language”.
As a regular professor, in 1930, Henrik Barak has given some subjects, among which we may point out: the mutual relations of Balkan languages, the chronology of Albanian fossils, the historical grammar of Albanian, etc.
Professor Barac had a court process from the “court of honour”, done on behalf of the people, left Belgrade University in May 1945.
Barac left Belgrade at this time and moved to Zagreb, then to 1952, where he lived until the end of his life and dedicated all his work to Balkan studies and albanology.
