American diplomat: Milosevic left no choice but for Kosovo independence

Former US Ambassador to the United Nations Zalmay Khalilzad has said his perception of Kosovo had developed in a way that had convinced him that the plan under way at the time was needed. That independence was necessary and that the people of Kosovo had the right to be independent. [...]
That independence was necessary and that the people of Kosovo had the right to be independent.
In the exclusive interview for “Zona B” of Klan Kosova Khalilzad has explained his contribution to the Kosovo independence process.
“Millosheqi with what had made no choice other than the independence of Kosovo” has stated Khalilzad.
“Independence was the only proper target, of course there were challenges to doing so”.
He has said that when he took over the role of ambassador the agenda was determined by the meeting calendar and that the trip to Kosovo was planned.
I would either come to Kosovo myself or send my deputy. I was told to send someone because I was young at this point”
I decided, however, it was more important to come here and not send someone else”, he added.
He has passed this decision as a key and has taken it because of the good relations he had with then US President George W. Bush.
Khalilzad has also talked about Russia's interventions in the Kosovo issue.
“NATO did not appreciate this Russian intervention and feared the precedents that were to be created at that time”.
“Russia was afraid that within it there could be another”, Khalilzad explained.
He has said they had stressed that they were not trying to create precedent, as the situation was unique considering the way Miloscevic had treated Albanians.
The process had begun here with Kosovars' self - sacrifice for their freedom, and this had created a new reality”, he continued.
Khalilzad has expressed condolences about the death of Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, who was then working hard against Kosovo's independence.
Explore condolences for Churkin's death. We knew Russia was against Kosovo and in part connected with the powerful ties Russia had with Serbia's leadership”
