Agius is visiting Serbia, where he met with Serbia's president earlier in the day and with the presidents of other countries in the region before the closure of this court at the end of the year, reports “b92”, Periscopi broadcast.
According to the Serbian government, Agius “conveys to the prime minister that The Hague Tribunal had fulfilled its role during his work and that it was now in the hands of countries in the region to work on the reconciliation process”.
He also said he was working intensively to establish the International Criminal Crimes Mechanism, which would continue to carry out the ICTY's functions.
According to a statement, Brnabiq urged Agius to take the necessary steps to return the documentation presented by Serbia at the request of The Hague's Tribunal Prosecutor and called on everything to be done to improve the treatment of Serb prisoners suffering sentences under court decisions.
The prime minister said Serbia has fulfilled its obligations to the tribunal, but has expressed its doubts that this court has contributed to reconciliation in the region.
Brnabiq said Serbia “needs to be committed to reconciliation between former Yugoslav states and to maintaining regional stability”.
Before her meeting with Agius on Wednesday, the prime minister said the ICTY was not impartial and had not contributed to reconciliation among states./Periscopi/
