International Civilian Representative in Kosovo Pieter Feith estimates that in Kosovo, despite having had many positive developments, however, more work is needed for progress on some key issues, such as dialogue with Serbia, rule of law and efforts for Kosovo to be closer to the European Union.
In an interview for public television, Feith also spoke of demarcation and army creation.
I honestly think some things have to change. I think the dialogue is very high-directed by Brussels and is very confidential and confidential. Nobody knows what the purpose of dialogue is. I think that many people in Kosovo and also in Serbia are confused and not taught, are skeptical of what is happening. My suggestion, and that I have told you in Brussels, is to work from below, with civil society, women's organisations, NGOs, experts in Kosovo, where there are many. I know there's a rich presence of civil society activists. They should be informed and transparency against them. Because an agreement on such a sensitive issue as the normalisation of the future with Serbia needs a fundamental basis and support from the population and, of course, this is still missing. Instead of working through presidents, prime ministers and ministers, which should also be done, we have to work upside down and I think there's a lot of work to be done”, Feith said.
Feith, speaking about demarcation with Montenegro, has said resolving this issue should not be too difficult, hoping there is political will in Podgorica to reopen the discussion.
“recognises this aspirin and will happen at some given moment. I believe we should be aware of the stability in the region. We should be aware of the NATO headquarters's advice on the issue. As a measure of confidence building, my recommendation would be not to give too much pressure at this stage. I think the situation is still sensitive at this moment”, Faith said.
